Craig Goess and his #81 Greenville Toyota Camry team headed to Kansas Speedway (KS) to compete in the ARCA RE/MAX Series event last Thursday, looking for a solid finish, but early on, it seemed that might be out of reach.  An early spin put Goess at the back of the field, but some pit strategy and true grit from behind the wheel of the race car got Goess back up towards the front, finishing in the 10th position.

Goess started from the sixth position, but a combination of the set-up on the car and the wind at the track kicking up sent Goess for a spin early in the race.

“We were just fighting a snappy-loose car,” said Goess.   “The wind was kind of bad and in the first couple laps, the wind was making the car worse off of turn four.  We had someone come up behind us and take the air off the spoiler and the car just snapped around with no warning.  I had been chasing the car off four all day, so it wasn’t like I wasn’t prepared for it, but there was no catching it that time.”

Knowing that they had to make some changes in their plan for the day, Goess and his team changed up their pit strategy to get them to the top of the leader board, eventually finishing 10th.

“We stayed out and didn’t pit,” explained Goess.  “We got some track position and led like three laps.  All the guys behind us had fresh tires, so they passed us and we were in third for a little while.  It was such a melee on the final restart.  The lane that I picked wasn’t the right one on the last lap and we lost a couple positions we shouldn’t have, but all in all it wasn’t a bad day.”

Next up on Goess’ schedule is the ARCA RE/MAX Series 2009 finale at Rockingham Speedway (NC) on Sunday, October 11th.
